background pieces • Assorted dark same-color-family scraps • 11/4" x 71/2" brown F rectangle • 1/4 yard coordinating solid • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies
Sample wall quilts were completed in blue and orange versions, with these colors making up the dark-fabric portion of quilts. Materials given and cutting instructions are for one wall quilt. From light scraps: • Cut 12 (2½") A squares. • Cut 4 (27⁄8") squares; cut each square in half
on 1 diagonal to make 8 B triangles. • Cut 2 (1¼" x 3") E rectangles. From dark scraps: • Cut 16 (2½") C squares. • Cut 4 (27⁄8") squares; cut each square in half
on 1 diagonal to make 8 D triangles. From coordinating solid: • Cut 2 (2¼" by fabric width) binding strips.
COMPLETING THE WALL QUILT
1. Sew a B triangle to a D triangle to make a B-D unit as shown in Figure 1; press seam toward D. Repeat to make a total of eight B-D units. 2. Join three A squares to make an A row; press seams to one side. Repeat to make a total of four A rows. 3. Join two C squares and one B-D unit to make a B-D-C row as shown in Figure 2; press seams away from the B-D unit. Repeat to make a total of four B-D-C rows and four reverse B-D-C rows. 4. Join an A row with two B-D-C rows to make a wing half-unit as shown in Figure 3; press. Repeat to make a second wing half-unit. 5. Repeat step 4 with reverse B-D-C rows to complete two reverse wing half-units referring to Figure 4. 6. Join one wing half-unit with one reverse wing half-unit to make a wing unit as shown in Figure 5; press. Repeat to make a second wing unit. 7. Sew an E rectangle to each end of the F rectangle to make the body unit referring to Figure 6; press seams toward F.
8. Sew the body unit between the two wing units to complete the butterfly top referring to the Assembly Diagram; press seams toward the body unit.
9. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 126. 10. Quilt as desired. 11. Bind referring to Quilting Basics on page 126 to finish.
