CUT­TING

Sam­ple wall quilts were com­pleted in blue and orange ver­sions, with these col­ors mak­ing up the dark-fab­ric por­tion of quilts. Ma­te­ri­als given and cut­ting in­struc­tions are for one wall quilt. From light scraps: • Cut 12 (2½") A squares. • Cut 4 (27⁄8") squares; cut each square in half

on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 8 B tri­an­gles. • Cut 2 (1¼" x 3") E rec­tan­gles. From dark scraps: • Cut 16 (2½") C squares. • Cut 4 (27⁄8") squares; cut each square in half

on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 8 D tri­an­gles. From co­or­di­nat­ing solid: • Cut 2 (2¼" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

COM­PLET­ING THE WALL QUILT

1. Sew a B tri­an­gle to a D tri­an­gle to make a B-D unit as shown in Fig­ure 1; press seam to­ward D. Re­peat to make a to­tal of eight B-D units. 2. Join three A squares to make an A row; press seams to one side. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four A rows. 3. Join two C squares and one B-D unit to make a B-D-C row as shown in Fig­ure 2; press seams away from the B-D unit. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four B-D-C rows and four re­verse B-D-C rows. 4. Join an A row with two B-D-C rows to make a wing half-unit as shown in Fig­ure 3; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond wing half-unit. 5. Re­peat step 4 with re­verse B-D-C rows to com­plete two re­verse wing half-units re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 4. 6. Join one wing half-unit with one re­verse wing half-unit to make a wing unit as shown in Fig­ure 5; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond wing unit. 7. Sew an E rect­an­gle to each end of the F rect­an­gle to make the body unit re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 6; press seams to­ward F.

8. Sew the body unit be­tween the two wing units to com­plete the but­ter­fly top re­fer­ring to the Assem­bly Di­a­gram; press seams to­ward the body unit.

9. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 126. 10. Quilt as de­sired. 11. Bind re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 126 to fin­ish.
