MA­TE­RI­ALS

• Scraps of as­sorted blue, green,

turquoise and teal batiks* • 1/2 yard each 3 blue or green batiks* • 11/4 yards dark blue batik* • 2 yards back­ing* • 2 (20" x 16") rec­tan­gles bat­ting* • 60" x 24" rect­an­gle bat­ting* • Thread* • Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies

CUT­TING

Ma­te­ri­als listed yield one ta­ble run­ner and two place mats.

From batik scraps:

• Cut 24 (21/2") A squares.

From blue or green batiks: • Cut 1 (121/2" by fab­ric width) strip from each of the 3 fab­rics. From 2 fab­rics, sub­cut each strip into 1 (121/2") C square and 1 (101/2" x 121/2") E rect­an­gle; from re­main­ing strip, sub­cut 1 (121/2") C square.

From dark blue batik: • Cut 7 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut 4 strips into 10 (21/2" x 121/2") B strips. Set aside 3 re­main­ing strips for D. • Cut 7 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips. From back­ing fab­ric: • Cut 1 (60" x 24") ta­ble run­ner back­ing piece

and 2 (20" x 16") place mat back­ing pieces.

COM­PLET­ING THE PLACE MATS

1. Se­lect and join six A squares to make an A strip re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1; press seams in one di­rec­tion. 2. Sew a B strip to op­po­site sides of the A strip to com­plete an A-B strip as shown in Fig­ure 2; press seams to­ward B.

3. Sew the A-B strip to one 121/2" edge of an E rect­an­gle to com­plete one place mat top re­fer­ring to the Assem­bly Di­a­gram; press seam to­ward E.
