CUT­TING From yel­low solid:

• Cut 2 (21/4" by fab­ric width) strips. Cut as per in­struc­tions to make B di­a­monds.

From green print:

• Cut 1 (61/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 13 (21/2" x 61/2") C rec­tan­gles. • Cut 1 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 13 (21/2") D squares.

From red print:

• Cut 1 (71/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 13 (21/2" x 71/2") A rec­tan­gles. • Cut 5 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

From white print:

• Cut 3 (121/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 26 (31/2" x 121/2") E and 4 (71/2" x 81/2") I rec­tan­gles. • Cut 1 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 13 (21/2") G squares. • Cut 1 (41/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 13 (21/2" x 41/2")

H rec­tan­gles. • Cut 2 (31/2" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 26 (3" x 31/2")

F rec­tan­gles.

COM­PLET­ING THE BLOCKS

1. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1, mea­sure and mark 7/8" from the top right cor­ner on the 3" edge of an F rec­tan­gle. Re­peat, mea­sur­ing from the bot­tom left cor­ner. Layer a sec­ond F piece wrong sides to­gether with the marked piece and cut from mark to mark to make two F pieces and two re­versed F pieces, again re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1. Re­peat with the re­main­ing F rec­tan­gles to make 26 each F and re­versed F pieces.

2. Us­ing the 45-de­gree an­gle line on your ro­tary ruler, cut 13 (21/4") di­a­monds from the B strips as shown in Fig­ure 2.

3. Sew an F piece to op­po­site sides of a B di­a­mond, ex­tend­ing F be­yond the top and bot­tom points of B as shown in Fig­ure 3; press. Note: When placed right sides to­gether be­fore stitch­ing, the nar­row end of F should meet the edge of B at the 1/4" seam al­lowance.

4. Re­peat step 3 with the re­versed F pieces to make 13 B-F units as shown in Fig­ure 4.

5. Trim each B-F unit to 21/2" x 51/2", trim­ming 1/4" away from bot­tom point of B, keep­ing B cen­tered in width to leave a 1/4" seam al­lowance at side cor­ners and mea­sur­ing 51/2" from the trimmed bot­tom to trim the top as shown in Fig­ure 5.

6. Make a mark 21/2" in from the bot­tom left cor­ner on the wrong side of an H rec­tan­gle. Mark a di­ag­o­nal line from the mark to the up­per left cor­ner as shown in Fig­ure 6.

7. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 7, place the marked H rec­tan­gle right sides to­gether on the right end of a C rec­tan­gle and stitch on the marked line. Trim seam al­lowance to 1/4" and press H to the right side.

8. Mark a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of a G square. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 8, place G right sides to­gether on the left end of C and stitch on the marked line. Trim seam al­lowance and press G to the right side to com­plete one C-G-H unit.

9. Re­peat steps 6–8 to com­plete a to­tal of 13 C-G-H units.

10. To com­plete one Can­dle­stick block, se­lect one each B-F unit, C-G-H unit, A rec­tan­gle and D square, and two E rec­tan­gles.

11. Sew the B-F unit to one end of A and add an E rec­tan­gle to each long side as shown in Fig­ure 9; press.

12. Mark a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of the D square. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 10, place D on the lower right cor­ner of the right E piece and stitch on the marked line. Trim seam al­lowance to 1/4" and press D to the right side to com­plete the can­dle unit.

13. Sew the C-G-H unit to the end of the can­dle unit to com­plete one Can­dle­stick block as shown in Fig­ure 11; press.

14. Re­peat steps 10–13 to com­plete a to­tal of 13 Can­dle­stick blocks.
