H rectangles. • Cut 2 (31/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 26 (3" x 31/2")
F rectangles.
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Referring to Figure 1, measure and mark 7/8" from the top right corner on the 3" edge of an F rectangle. Repeat, measuring from the bottom left corner. Layer a second F piece wrong sides together with the marked piece and cut from mark to mark to make two F pieces and two reversed F pieces, again referring to Figure 1. Repeat with the remaining F rectangles to make 26 each F and reversed F pieces.
2. Using the 45-degree angle line on your rotary ruler, cut 13 (21/4") diamonds from the B strips as shown in Figure 2.
3. Sew an F piece to opposite sides of a B diamond, extending F beyond the top and bottom points of B as shown in Figure 3; press. Note: When placed right sides together before stitching, the narrow end of F should meet the edge of B at the 1/4" seam allowance.
4. Repeat step 3 with the reversed F pieces to make 13 B-F units as shown in Figure 4.
5. Trim each B-F unit to 21/2" x 51/2", trimming 1/4" away from bottom point of B, keeping B centered in width to leave a 1/4" seam allowance at side corners and measuring 51/2" from the trimmed bottom to trim the top as shown in Figure 5.
6. Make a mark 21/2" in from the bottom left corner on the wrong side of an H rectangle. Mark a diagonal line from the mark to the upper left corner as shown in Figure 6.
7. Referring to Figure 7, place the marked H rectangle right sides together on the right end of a C rectangle and stitch on the marked line. Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and press H to the right side.
8. Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of a G square. Referring to Figure 8, place G right sides together on the left end of C and stitch on the marked line. Trim seam allowance and press G to the right side to complete one C-G-H unit.
9. Repeat steps 6–8 to complete a total of 13 C-G-H units.
10. To complete one Candlestick block, select one each B-F unit, C-G-H unit, A rectangle and D square, and two E rectangles.
11. Sew the B-F unit to one end of A and add an E rectangle to each long side as shown in Figure 9; press.
12. Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the D square. Referring to Figure 10, place D on the lower right corner of the right E piece and stitch on the marked line. Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and press D to the right side to complete the candle unit.
13. Sew the C-G-H unit to the end of the candle unit to complete one Candlestick block as shown in Figure 11; press.
14. Repeat steps 10–13 to complete a total of 13 Candlestick blocks.
