Here’s a tra­di­tional pieced beauty.

MA­TE­RI­ALS

• 3/4 yard cream tonal* • 1 yard light gray tonal* • 15/ 8 yards gray/black deer print* • 21/4 yards dark gray tonal* • Back­ing to size • Bat­ting to size • Thread • Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies *Stone­henge Moun­tain Wilder­ness fab­ric col­lec­tion from North­cott used to make sam­ple.

CUT­TING

From cream tonal: • Cut 6 (33/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 56 (33/ 8") A squares and 8 (3") H squares. From light gray tonal: • Cut 7 (33/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips.

Sub­cut strips into 72 (33/ 8") B squares. • Cut 1 (51/2" by fab­ric width) strip.

Sub­cut strip into 4 (51/2") N squares. From gray/black deer print: • Cut 2 (51/2" x 451/2") K2 strips along the

length of the fab­ric. • Cut 4 (51/2" by re­main­ing fab­ric width)

K1 strips. • Cut 7 (33/ 8" by re­main­ing fab­ric width) strips.

Sub­cut strips into 56 (33/ 8") C squares. • Cut 1 (3" by re­main­ing fab­ric width) strip.

Sub­cut strip into 8 (3") E squares. From dark gray tonal: • Cut 2 (33/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips.

Sub­cut strips into 16 (33/ 8") D squares. • Cut 1 (101/2" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 8 (3" x 101/2") G

rec­tan­gles and 8 (3") F squares. • Cut 2 (3" x 401/2") I strips. • Cut 9 (3" by fab­ric width) J/L/M strips. • Cut 7 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

COM­PLET­ING THE PIECED UNITS

1. Mark a di­ag­o­nal line from cor­ner to cor­ner on the wrong side of each A square and 44 C squares. 2. Re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 1, place an A square right sides to­gether with a B square; stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut the unit apart on the marked line to make two A-B units. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 80 A-B units. 3. Re­peat step 2 with re­main­ing A and B squares, and C and D squares to make 24 A-C (use un­marked C squares for A-C units), eight A-D, 64 B-C and 24 C-D units as shown in Fig­ure 2.

COM­PLET­ING THE BLOCKS

1. To make one Block A, se­lect one A-D, two C-D, four B-C and seven A-B units, and one each E and F square. 2. Ar­range and join the units and squares in four rows re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 3; press.

3. Join the rows to com­plete one Block A; press.

4. Re­peat steps 1–3 to com­plete a to­tal of four Block A’s.

5. To make one Block B, se­lect one C-D, three A-C, four B-C and four A-B units, and one G rec­tan­gle.

6. Re­peat steps 2 and 3 re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 4 to com­plete one Block B.

7. Re­peat steps 5 and 6 to com­plete a to­tal of four Block B’s.

8. Se­lect one C-D, three A-C and four each A-B and B-C units, and one G rec­tan­gle to make one Block C.

9. Re­peat steps 2 and 3 re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 5 to com­plete one Block C.

10. Re­peat steps 8 and 9 to com­plete a to­tal of four Block C’s.

11. Se­lect one A-D, two C-D, four B-C and five A-B units, one each E and F square, and two H squares to com­plete one Block D.

12. Re­peat steps 2 and 3 re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 6 to com­plete one Block D. 13. Re­peat steps 11 and 12 to com­plete a to­tal of four Block D’s.

COM­PLET­ING THE QUILT

Re­fer to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram for con­struc­tion steps.

1. Ar­range and join the pieced blocks in four rows of four blocks each to form the cen­ter medal­lion; press.

2. Join the rows to com­plete the pieced cen­ter; press.

3. Sew I strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press.

4. Join the J/L/M strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two each 3" x 451/2" J strips, 3" x 551/2" L strips and 3" x 601/2" M strips.

5. Sew J strips to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press.

6. Sew K2 strips to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press.

7. Join the K1 strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two 51/2" x 451/2" K1 strips.

8. Sew an N square to each end of each K1 strip; press. Sew these strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter; press.

9. Sew L strips to op­po­site sides and M strips to the top and bot­tom of the pieced cen­ter to com­plete the quilt top; press.

10. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 94.

11. Quilt as de­sired. 12. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 94 to fin­ish.
