MA­TE­RI­ALS

• 1/4 yard medium yel­low tonal

• 3/4 yard light yel­low tonal

• 11/ 8 yards light or­ange tonal

• 11/ 8 yards bur­gundy tonal

• 11/4 yards dark yel­low tonal

• 17/ 8 yards dark or­ange tonal

• Back­ing to size

• Bat­ting to size • Thread

• Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies

CUT­TING

From medium yel­low tonal: • Cut 2 (2" by fab­ric width) J strips. From light yel­low tonal: • Cut 2 (5" by fab­ric width) strips.

Sub­cut strips into 16 (5") H squares. • Cut 1 (23/ 8" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 6 (23/ 8" squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 12 L tri­an­gles. • Cut 5 (2" by fab­ric width) I strips. From light or­ange tonal: • Cut 3 (53/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 16 (53/ 8") B, 1 (5") K and 8 (2") N squares. Cut each B square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 32 B tri­an­gles. • Cut 6 (2" by fab­ric width) F strips. From bur­gundy tonal: • Cut 2 (53/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 8 (53/ 8") A squares and 4 (5") D squares. Cut each A square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 16 A tri­an­gles. • Cut 1 (2" by fab­ric width) T strip. • Cut 7 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips. From dark yel­low tonal: • Cut 1 (53/ 8" by fab­ric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 6 (53/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 12 O tri­an­gles. • Cut 9 (2" by fab­ric width) G strips. • Cut 6 (2" by fab­ric width) P/Q strips. From dark or­ange tonal: • Cut 4 (2" by fab­ric width) E strips. • Cut 3 (53/ 8" by fab­ric width) strips. Sub­cut strips into 16 (53/ 8") C squares and 4 (2") M squares. Cut each C square in half on 1 di­ag­o­nal to make 32 C tri­an­gles. • Cut 6 (5" by fab­ric width) R/S strips.

COM­PLET­ING THE PIECED UNITS

1. Sew an E strip be­tween an F strip and a T strip with right sides to­gether along length to make a T-E-F strip set; press. Sub­cut strip set into eight 5"-square T-E-F units as shown in Fig­ure 1. 2. Re­peat step 1 with E, F and G strips to make two E-F-G strip sets. Sub­cut strip sets into 16 (5"-square) E-F-G units as shown in Fig­ure 2.

3. Re­peat step 1 with one F strip be­tween two G strips to make a G-F-G strip set; sub­cut strip set into four 5"-square G-F-G units re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 3.

4. Re­peat step 1 with re­main­ing strips to make strip sets re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 4 for strips used and or­der of piec­ing. Cut strip sets into 2" x 5" seg­ments as di­rected in Fig­ure 4.

5. Join one each F-J-I, G-I-J and F-G-I seg­ment to make an F unit as shown in Fig­ure 5. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 16 F units.

6. Sew a G-E-G seg­ment be­tween two I-G-I seg­ments to make an E unit as shown in Fig­ure 6; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of eight E units.

7. Sew an A tri­an­gle to an O tri­an­gle to make an A-O unit as shown in Fig­ure 7; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 12 A-O units.

8. Sew a B tri­an­gle to a C tri­an­gle to make a B-C unit as shown in Fig­ure 8; press. Re­peat to make 32 B-C units.

COM­PLET­ING BLOCK 1

1. Se­lect one M square, two N squares, three L tri­an­gles and one A tri­an­gle. Ar­range and join to make an A unit as shown in Fig­ure 9; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four A units.

2. To com­plete one Block 1, se­lect one A unit, one F unit and two B-C units.

3. Ar­range and join the units to make two rows re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 10; press.

4. Join the two rows re­fer­ring to the block draw­ing to com­plete one Block 1; press.

5. Re­peat steps 2–4 to com­plete a to­tal of four Block 1’s.

COM­PLET­ING BLOCK 2

1. To com­plete one Block 2, se­lect one F unit, one A-O unit and two B-C units. 2. Ar­range and join the units to make two rows re­fer­ring to Fig­ure 11; press.

3. Join the rows re­fer­ring to the block draw­ing to com­plete one Block 2; press.

4. Re­peat steps 1–3 to com­plete a to­tal of 12 Block 2’s.

COM­PLET­ING FOUR- BLOCK UNITS

1. Sew an H square to an E-F-G unit to make an H unit as shown in Fig­ure 12; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of 16 H units.

2. Join two Block 2’s with one H unit to make a row as shown in Fig­ure 13; press.

3. Sew an H unit be­tween one each Block 1 and Block 2 to make a row as shown in Fig­ure 14; press.

4. Join two H units with a D square to make a D row as shown in Fig­ure 15; press.

5. Join the two block rows with the D row to make a four-block unit as shown in Fig­ure 16; press.

6. Re­peat steps 2–5 to com­plete a to­tal of four four-block units.

COM­PLET­ING THE QUILT

Re­fer to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram as needed for com­plet­ing the quilt.

1. Join two T-E-F units and two E units with a G-F-G unit to make a sash­ing strip as shown in Fig­ure 17; press. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four sash­ing strips.

2. Ar­range and join the four-block units with the sash­ing strips and the K square to com­plete the pieced cen­ter, mak­ing sure that the Block 1 cor­ners of each four-block unit are at the cen­ter of the quilt top; press.

3. Join the P/Q strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two each 2" x 50" P strips and 2" x 53" Q strips.

4. Sew P strips to the top and bot­tom, and Q strips to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter; press.

5. Join the R/S strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two each 5" x 53" R strips and 5" x 62" S strips along length of fab­ric.

6. Sew the R strips to the top and bot­tom, and S strips to op­po­site sides of the pieced cen­ter to com­plete the quilt top; press.

7. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 94. 8. Quilt as de­sired. 9. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 94 to fin­ish.
