The New Family Unit
My stepdaughter, Pamela, a veterinarian, was visiting her aunt when they noticed a butterfly flying erratically around the room. Cupping it in her hands, Pamela realized a quarter of its wing was missing. While Auntie held the wings still with toothpicks, Pamela performed surgery with scissors and contact cement. She fashioned a tiny prosthesis from a napkin and gently attached it to the wing. A minute later, the creature fluttered out a nearby window. As the two women were congratulating each other, the butterfly reentered the room, flew around, and landed directly over Pamela’s heart.
