Dance Across Amer­ica vis­its Grasonville

GRASONVILLE — Fri­day evening, April 22, Jean Marie Dance Stu­dio hosted Louie Perez, of New York, an en­er­getic dance chore­og­ra­pher who be­gan his third an­nual “Coast 2 Coast: Dance Across Amer­ica” tour in Grasonville be­fore go­ing on to his next stop in Pitts­burgh Satur­day.

Perez, who came to the U.S. as a Cuban im­mi­grant when he was 10 (more than 30 years ago), orig­i­nally set­tled in Los An­ge­les, with his par­ents. In his youth, he de­vel­oped a pas­sion for danc­ing. His par­ents could not af­ford to pay for lessons. Through the ef­forts of his teacher, it was ar­ranged for Perez to con­tinue tak­ing dance lessons by mop­ping and clean­ing the dance floors at the Deb­bie Reynolds Dance Stu­dio, in North Hol­ly­wood, Cal­i­for­nia, where he be­gan learn­ing his skills.

He went on to per­form in nu­mer­ous tour­ing and LA Broad­way shows around the na­tion. For the past decade, Perez has owned his suc­cess­ful VP Dance Academy stu­dio in Fishkill, NY.

His tour is themed, “Never Give Up On Your Dreams,” and he has stu­dent shout those words dur­ing his free dance clin­ics as he trav­els across the na­tion dur­ing Na­tional Dance Week.

He said, “Re­gard­less of what your dream is, never give-up on it! If you have a pas­sion for some­thing, stay with it.”

The tour pro­motes health and fit­ness along with the ideals of per­sis­tence, per­se­ver­ance, pas­sion and pos­i­tiv­ity. The tour ends in Port­land, Ore­gon, later this week.

Jean Marie Dance Stu­dio in Grasonville has been open for the past decade of­fer­ing a wide va­ri­ety of dance train­ing to both youth and adults. Owner Jean Marie, a na­tive Mary­lan­der, per­formed with Deb­bie Reynolds in Reynolds’ dance show in Las Ve­gas, be­gin­ning 25 years ago. For those who don’t re­mem­ber Deb­bie Reynolds, she’s the mother of ac­tress Car­rie Fisher (Princess Leia, of Star Wars movie fame).
