CHURCH HILL — The Church Hill Town Commissioners awarded a new contract for trash disposal and approved a new budget for the operation of the town’s sewer plant at their meeting on Monday, May 2.

Two bids were submitted for removal of trash over the next three years, said Acting Town Administrator Ross Rhodes.

Chesapeake Waste Industries of Salisbury submitted a bid of $2,867.20 a month through June 2019 for picking up the refuse of town residents and businesses and hauling it away.

The average trash removal from the town each week is estimated at about six tons, Rhodes said.

The second bid came in from Bates Trash Removal of Beltsville, which quoted a fixed monthly rate of $4,080. Like Chesapeake Waste, its bid was for service through June 30, 2019.

“It’s a pretty substantial cost difference,” said Commissioner Charlie Rhodes. “We’ve got some history with Chesapeake Waste.” The company has been hauling the town’s trash for some years, according to Ross Rhodes.

The commissioners voted unanimously to accept the bid of Chesapeake Waste Industry.

Also at the May 2 meeting, Maryland Environmental Service, which has operated the town’s sewage treatment plant for more than 15 years, submitted its proposed sewer plant budget for Fiscal Year 2017.

It quoted a price of $43,162 for operation and maintenance of the plant. Its charge to the town for current Fiscal Year 2016 was $42,355.

The commissioners voted unanimously to accept MES’s proposal for Fiscal Years 2017, which begins July 1 of this year. BULK TRASH PICKUP This year’s bulk trash removal day for the Town of Church Hill is Saturday, May 21 at 7 a.m.
