QACHS bands take top honors at festival
CENTREVILLE — Each year, the bands from Queen Anne’s County High School, under the direction of Eric Wright, have taken an annual spring trip that has allowed them to visit and perform at various places up and down the East Coast from Boston, Massachusetts to the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. On Friday and Saturday, April 30 and 31, “The Pride of the Eastern Shore” Bands from Queen Anne’s County High School that included the Marching Lions Band, Concert Band, and Symphonic Band traveled to Massaponax High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia to participate in the Music in the Parks Kings Dominion Music Festival.
The Concert Band and Symphonic Band presented their performances on Friday evening and the Marching Lions Band performed Saturday morning. After the marching band performance on Saturday, band members enjoyed a day of fun at Kings Dominion, where they also attended the awards ceremony for the Friday and Saturday competitions.
At the awards ceremony the QACHS Concert Band was awarded first place in the high school group AA Concert Band II category and received an “excellence” rating from the judges.
The QACHS Symphonic Band received a “superior” rating from the judges and was awarded first place in the high school group AA Concert Band I category, as well as, the “Best Overall” award for HS Concert Bands.
The QACHS Marching Lions Band also received a rating of “superior” and placed second in the HS Parade Band category.
At the conclusion of the performance awards, there was one additional special award given, as a result of observed behavior and attitude by the Music in the Parks staff at the festival site during the weekend and at the awards ceremony. The Esprit de Corps award was awarded to Queen Anne’s County High School Bands.
