Win­ners of the Amer­i­can­ism Es­say con­test rec­og­nized in Queen­stown

QUEEN­STOWN — More than 100 stu­dents, par­ents and Queen Anne’s County com­mu­nity mem­bers gath­ered in­side the Queen­stown Amer­i­can Le­gion on Tues­day, May 3, to cel­e­brate the win­ners of the an­nual Amer­i­can­ism Es­say Award Pro­gram.

Nola Wil­lis, North Eastern Shore Dis­trict pres­i­dent and pres­i­dent of Unit 296, Mary Davis, Unit 18, and Faye Hick­man, Unit 278, pre­sented the awards to the in­di­vid­ual win­ners.

Wil­lis said the theme for the es­say con­test, which is a na­tional com­pe­ti­tion, was “How do we keep Lin­coln’s prom­ise to our vet­er­ans and their fam­i­lies?” Be­tween the three units in the county, more than 115 es­says from stu­dents were re­ceived, Wil­lis said.

The con­test was bro­ken into three classes with three win­ners each. Each Unit gave out awards to win­ners.

Tyler Lev from Mat­a­peake Mid­dle School, Emma Trump from MMS and Kait­lyn Robin­son from Centreville Mid­dle School re­ceived first, sec­ond and third places, re­spec­tively, in the Jeff Davis Unit #18 Amer­i­can­ism Es­say Award Pro­gram for the Class 3 cat­e­gory (grades 7 and 8). Kent Is­land Unit #278 Amer­i­can­ism Es­say Con­test win­ners Jonah Smith from Bay­side El­e­men­tary School (first place), Jack Ster­shie from BES (sec­ond place) and Mat­tie Hull from BES (third place) re­ceive their award in Queen­stown on Tues­day, May 3.
