CH­ESTER — James Phillip Hor­ney Sr., “Capt. Phil” of Ch­ester, MD, died Mon­day June 21, 2016, at UMSMC at Eas­ton. He was 82.

Born on Au­gust 13, 1933, in Gra­sonville, MD, he was the son of the late Charles and Kit Hor­ney. Phil grew up in Gra­sonville and at­tended Stevensville High School. He served in the U.S Army from 1953 to 1955 and re­turned to the Eastern Shore to marry his beloved wife Jac­que­line Wy­att on Novem­ber 27, 1955.

Capt. Phil was a suc­cess­ful water­man. He crabbed in the Eastern Bay and hand­tonged for oys­ters through­out the Bay. He made his own eel pots and fished them in the Wye River. He loved work­ing on the wa­ter and spend­ing time with his fam­ily. He re­tired at the age of 74.

He is sur­vived by his wife, Jac­que­line Wy­att Hor­ney of Ch­ester; his sons, James Phillip Hor­ney Jr. and wife Joyce and Charles “Chet” Hor­ney, both of Ch­ester; his daugh­ter, Eve Fishell and hus­band Kevin of Fed­er­als­burg; seven grand­chil­dren; Brian and Kevin Hor­ney, Jonah Saun­ders, Joy Crossley, Kit, Kas­sidy, and Kar­ley Fishell; nine great-grand­chil­dren; and three of his seven sib­lings, Paige Demma, Mike Hor­ney and Dave Hor­ney.

He is pre­de­ceased by his broth­ers; Joe and Wayne Hor­ney and sis­ters; Norma Ben­ney and Peggy Dono­van.

A me­mo­rial prayer ser­vice will be held at 11 a.m. on Thurs­day, June 30, 2016, at Fel­lows, Helfen­bein and New­nam Fu­neral Home, P.A., 106 Sham­rock Road, Ch­ester, MD.

The fam­ily would like to in­vite friends and rel­a­tives to the Bay County Moose Lodge in Queenstown, fol­low­ing the ser vice.

Grave­side ser­vices were held Wed­nes­day, June 22, at Ch­ester­field Ceme­tery, Centreville.
