James Phillip Horney Sr.
CHESTER — James Phillip Horney Sr., “Capt. Phil” of Chester, MD, died Monday June 21, 2016, at UMSMC at Easton. He was 82.
Born on August 13, 1933, in Grasonville, MD, he was the son of the late Charles and Kit Horney. Phil grew up in Grasonville and attended Stevensville High School. He served in the U.S Army from 1953 to 1955 and returned to the Eastern Shore to marry his beloved wife Jacqueline Wyatt on November 27, 1955.
Capt. Phil was a successful waterman. He crabbed in the Eastern Bay and handtonged for oysters throughout the Bay. He made his own eel pots and fished them in the Wye River. He loved working on the water and spending time with his family. He retired at the age of 74.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Wyatt Horney of Chester; his sons, James Phillip Horney Jr. and wife Joyce and Charles “Chet” Horney, both of Chester; his daughter, Eve Fishell and husband Kevin of Federalsburg; seven grandchildren; Brian and Kevin Horney, Jonah Saunders, Joy Crossley, Kit, Kassidy, and Karley Fishell; nine great-grandchildren; and three of his seven siblings, Paige Demma, Mike Horney and Dave Horney.
He is predeceased by his brothers; Joe and Wayne Horney and sisters; Norma Benney and Peggy Donovan.
A memorial prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, MD.
The family would like to invite friends and relatives to the Bay County Moose Lodge in Queenstown, following the ser vice.

Douglas Whiteley Jr. and his wife Kim and great-grandson Bryce Marcus Whiteley, of Frederick; stepson Robert Smith and his wife Debbie, of Chestertown; stepdaughter Gwen Newell, of Galena; stepdaughter Syrta Smith, of Still Pond; stepson Tom Smith, of New Hampshire; stepson Henry Smith, of Betterton; and stepdaughter Becky Smith, of Catonsville.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, June 22, at Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville.
