CHESTERTOWN — Sarah Lillian “nee Ja­mar” Smith, of Chestertown, died on June 14, 2016 at the Univer­sity of Mary­land Shore Nurs­ing & Re­hab Cen­ter, Chestertown. She was 96.

Born in Morgnec, near Chestertown, on Feb. 15, 1920, she was the daugh­ter of the late Reuben Franklin Ja­mar and Janie Louise Usil­ton Ja­mar. She at­tended school in Morgnec, Kent County. She mar­ried Harry S. White­ley in 1938, and resided in Bet­ter­ton.

She worked for Glen L. Martin in Chestertown in the 1940s, Sweitser’s Hosiery Mill, Can­non Street, un­til the mid ‘50s and at Fish­ers Hosiery, on Flat­land Road, Chestertown, un­til 1961.

She and her sec­ond hus­band, Robert Allen Smith, moved to Cali, Columbia and Am­s­ter­dam, Hol­land, re­turn­ing to the U.S. in 1976 and made their home in Pennsville, N.J. They later re­turned to Kent­more Park, where they owned and op­er­ated the Kent­more Park Store. Her last res­i­dence was in Queen Anne’s County in the area of Crouse’s Mill, Queen Anne.

She was pre­ceded in death by her hus­band, Robert A. Smith, in Au­gust 2006; broth­ers, Reuben F. Jr. and Robert D. Ja­mar, of Rock Hall; sis­ters M. El­iz­a­beth My­ers, of Bet­ter­ton,
