PONDTOWN — Vivian Delores Garnett, of Pondtown, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at her home in Pondtown. She was 80.
Vivian D. Garnett was born Aug. 2, 1935 in Pondtown, the daughter of the late John Ashley and Mae “Fletcher” Ashley. Mrs. Garnett was a 1953 graduate of Kennard High School. She continued her education and graduated from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. After several years of substitute teaching, Vivian received her teaching degree and went to work for the Queen Anne’s County School system, where she taught for 28 years. Mrs. Garnett was a very active member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Pondtown, and the Martin Luther King Foundation. She enjoyed bowling, playing softball and speaking for churches.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Kennard Ashley, Melvin Ashley, Louis Elliott, Harold Ashley; and five sisters, Leona Hawkins, Marguerite Smith, Helen Jeffers, Evelyn Dozier and Rose Jeffers.
She is survived by her husband, Nelson Garnett of Pondtown; one daughter, Terese Garnett of Newark, Del.; two sons, Michael Garnett Sr. of Pondtown and Aaron Garnett of Pondtown; one sister, Gloria Faye Kennedy of Pondtown; one brother, Henry “Sonny” Ashley (Darlene) of Bear, Del.; special niece Virginia “Ginny” Roberts of Pondtown; adopted sister; Charlotte Potts of Quaker Neck; two stepchildren, Garcia Garnett (Vetodis) of Bear and Brenda Briscoe of Newark, Del.; sister-in-law Anna Ashley of Pondtown; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Pondtown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, also at the church.
Interment will be held in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery following the service.
