Robbery reported at Court Yard Inn
CHESTERTOWN — A Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s deputy was injured and four people arrested in the aftermath of the reported armed robbery of a couple at the Court Yard Inn on Md. Route 213 in Kingstown early Tuesday, July 26.
Police responded to a 911 call from Bernard L. Riddick and Linda C. Green at 12:30 a.m. reporting they had been robbed by three African American men brandishing a gun and knives. The couple told police the robbers took prescription pain medication and a cell phone and fled in a white Volkswagen passenger car.
The sheriff’s office put out an attempt to locate broadcast, said Lt. Dale Patrick, public information officer for the sheriff’s office. A short time later, a Queen Anne’s deputy saw a white Volkswagen headed south on Route 301 north of Centreville. He requested backup and prepared to stop the car, police said.
Since there was a possibility of a gun in the car, police stopped traffic in the opposite lane for citizen safety, Patrick said.
Having heard the broadcast about the armed robbery, troopers from the Maryland State Police Centreville Barracks also responded to assist deputies.
Tfc. Kyle Morrison, a five-year veteran, was in a marked 2015 Ford Explorer patrol vehicle following another trooper north on Route 301, south of Route 305, Patrick said. Both troopers had their emergency lights and sirens activated.
In preparation for making a felony stop of the suspects, deputies began to shut down northbound Route 301 traffic prior to where they planned to make the stop. Deputies were out of their cars and on foot.
Morrison and the other trooper came upon the deputies closing the highway. Both troopers braked suddenly and, due to the wet roadway, Morrison swerved into the median to avoid striking the patrol car in front of him, police said.
Deputy Stephen Creason appears to have seen the approaching patrol cars and moved into the median to get out of the way, police said. Morrison struck Creason with the right front corner bumper and fender of his patrol vehicle, police said.
Creason was flown by a Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment of a broken leg and other non-life threatening injuries.
Around lunchtime Tiuesday, Creason was out of surgery, which went well, Patrick said. He remains at the trauma center.
The occupants in the Volkswagen, three AfricanAmerican males and a white female were arrested and the vehicle impounded, police said. Detectives responded and interviewed the suspects and victims in the case.
