WILLARDS — The Bayside Breeze 18-under Teal softball team needed a clutch hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in Thursday’s USSSA World Series winners’ bracket game. It got two.

Angelica Sichette ripped an RBI triple down the right-field line to plate Amber Lovelace with the tying run, and Laurie Short blasted a pitch to deep left for the game-winning hit for a 3-2 comeback victory over Lady Rev’s of York, Pa.

The win gives the Breeze a 5-0 record in the 44-team, double-elimination tournament in Wicomico and Worcester counties.

Pitcher Joy Kolakowski kept the Lady Rev’s on their heels with an 11-strikeout, four-hit performance to earn the win. Kolakowski received stout defense from infielders Katelynn Miles, Kaylie Moore, Camryn Plugge and Sichette.

After the Lady Rev’s went ahead 2-0 in the fourth, Kolakowski allowed only two baserunners the rest of the game. Center fielder Sam Romberger took extra bases away with a leaping catch in the fifth inning.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Miles blasted a double to left-center, and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice groundout by Kassidy Willis. Sichette delivered an RBI single to right to cut the lead in half.

A single by Short (3 for 3, RBI) put runners at first and second for Plugge, who lined out to third for the second out. The Lady Rev’s halted the rally when Sichette was thrown out trying to steal third.

The Breeze put the tying run on with one out in the seventh, when Miles walked. Lovelace came in to pinch run. Willis nearly got extra bases when she ripped a liner down the first-base line that was caught for the second out.

On the verge of defeat, Sichette ripped a pitch that got past the Lady Rev’s diving right fielder for a triple that scored Lovelace for a 2-2 tie.

With the Breeze teammates buzzing, Short blasted the first pitch to the fence to score Sichette for a dramatic victory.
