Chestertown man charged in signs theft

CHESTERTOWN — A Chestertown man was charged with theft un­der $100 on a crim­i­nal sum­mons on July 14 af­ter al­legedly steal­ing po­lit­i­cal signs, ac­cord­ing to the Queen Anne’s County Sher­iff’s Of­fice.

The vic­tim re­ported the theft on July 8 af­ter po­lit­i­cal signs had been taken from his prop­erty mul­ti­ple times, po­lice said. The vic­tim set up a sur­veil­lance cam­era on the prop­erty and recorded mul­ti­ple peo­ple tak­ing the signs. The pho­tos of the cul­prits were posted on the Sher­iff’s Of­fice Face­book page and call­ers iden­ti­fied one sus­pect.

Ed­ward New­comer, 63, ad­mit­ted to tak­ing the signs “as a joke” on June 30 from 301 Pond Lane and said he was will­ing to re­turn them, po­lice said.
