9/11 Salute to Heroes planned in Grasonville
GRASONVILLE — Sunday, Sept. 11, is Patriot Day. As the nation remembers the loss of thousands who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on 9/11, it’s time again for the annual Salute to Heroes at The Jetty Restaurant and Dock Bar, 201 Wells Cove Road. Everyone in the community is invited to participate in what has become the area’s largest annual memorial for 9/11.
“Come out to The Jetty Dock Bar on Sept. 11, starting promptly at 6 p.m., and enjoy a moving ceremony, a memorial toast, live music, discounted food and drinks for public safety personnel and, most importantly, a chance to meet, greet and thank your local heroes for all their hard work,” said organizer Justin Davis.
The years marks the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. Davis has planned and hosted the local Salute to Heroes since 2003.
The Church Hill Volunteer Fire Department will have its rehabbed ladder truck from New York on hand to help display the giant American flag. Bag piper Randy Welch will be back to formally open and close the ceremony.
The event not only honors the lives of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but it also recognizes all public service personnel — firefighters, EMS, police, military, doctors and nurses — for the work they do.
The ceremony is set for 6 to 7 p.m.; Davis recommends arriving early. The dress code is casual, however, those wishing to wear uniforms or station gear are encouraged to do so.
Memorial T-shirts are available by advance order, which Davis is taking now. Sizes are available from small to XXL. T-shirts cost $15 for small, medium, large or extra large; $17 for XXL; and $19 for XXXL.
Departments attending who wish to bring a piece of apparatus are asked to contact Justin Davis in advance due to limited parking. All apparatus will be placed on Wells Cove Road or under the Kent Narrows Bridge. Call 410-829-2821.
Randy Welch and Rob Murray lead a procession of local emergency responders and military personnel into The Jetty Dock Bar during a previous Salute to Heroes.
