CH­ESTER­TOWN — Joel Bran­des, for­merly of Ch­ester­town and Co­conut Creek, Fla., died on Thurs­day, Sept. 1, 2016, at Union Me­mo­rial Hos­pi­tal in Baltimore. He was 79.

The son of David and Mary Bran­des, he proudly served his coun­try with the U.S. Navy. He later at­tended Hof­s­tra Univer­sity and en­joyed a ca­reer as an au­to­mo­tive af­ter­mar­ket ex­ec­u­tive, re­tir­ing in 1992.

In 1961, he mar­ried Francine Prospect, who sur­vives him. Mr. Bran­des and his wife were mem­bers of the Ch­ester­town Havu­rah. He en­joyed boat­ing, fish­ing and mil­i­tary-themed books and films.

In ad­di­tion to his wife of 54 years, he is sur­vived by his chil­dren, Mon­ica R. Bran­des of Baltimore and Bruce A. Bran­des of Nashville, Tenn., along with five grand­chil­dren, Cather­ine and Ge­orge Jones and Emily Grace, Jack and Lily Bran­des, as well as a brother.

Grave­side ser­vices were held Mon­day, Sept. 5, at Crump­ton Ceme­tery. Rel­a­tives and friends gathered af­ter­ward at the Ch­ester River Yacht & Countr y Club.
