CHESTERTOWN — Joel Brandes, formerly of Chestertown and Coconut Creek, Fla., died on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He was 79.
The son of David and Mary Brandes, he proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy. He later attended Hofstra University and enjoyed a career as an automotive aftermarket executive, retiring in 1992.
In 1961, he married Francine Prospect, who survives him. Mr. Brandes and his wife were members of the Chestertown Havurah. He enjoyed boating, fishing and military-themed books and films.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by his children, Monica R. Brandes of Baltimore and Bruce A. Brandes of Nashville, Tenn., along with five grandchildren, Catherine and George Jones and Emily Grace, Jack and Lily Brandes, as well as a brother.
Graveside services were held Monday, Sept. 5, at Crumpton Cemetery. Relatives and friends gathered afterward at the Chester River Yacht & Countr y Club.
