CENTREVILLE — Robert William Rhodes of Centreville died on Sept. 20, 2016, at University of Maryland Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown. He was 85.
He was born in Centreville, on June 10, 1931, the son of the late Harry Bernard and Helen Ross Rhodes. He was a graduate of Centreville High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany for two years. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 30, 1960. Mr. Rhodes was a member of the Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post 36 in Chestertown.
Mr. Rhodes worked in the construction industry and more specifically the building industry in Delaware. He retired in 1970 but continued to work on the family’s farm near Church Hill. During this time, he also cared for his ailing mother until her death in 1995. Mr. Rhodes worked periodically at the Route 213 Drive-in Theatre and helped his brother Ross Rhodes with his auctioneering business.
He enjoyed watching wrestling and NASCAR, as well as gardening.
He is survived by his brothers, John Rhodes of Lewes, Del., Harry Rhodes of Mooresville, N.C. and Joseph Rhodes of Linthicum; and a sister, Helen Louise Miley of Claymont, Del.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, where relatives and friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. (one hour prior). Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery.
