Grasonville VFD golf tourney fundraiser rescheduled Oct. 17
GRASONVILLE — The deluge of rain Monday, Sept. 19, forced Grasonville Volunteer Fire Department to postpone its fundraising golf tournament. The new date for the tournament is Monday, Oct. 17, still at Prospect Bay Country Club.
Organizers aren’t discouraged by the postponement. They said this is an opportunity for more teams to sign up to participate.
The cost is $125 per person, $450 per foursome. The fire department is only equipped to take cash and checks, but the tournament has an Eventbrite link and people can register there using a credit card.
The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. in a four-person scramble format. Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place teams, as well as closest to the pin and a hole-in-one contest, said Fire Chief Jason Anthony.
Lunch and beer are provided, along with cash bar, raffles and door prizes.
For more information, contact golf chairman Tom Sheahan at Tsheahan02@ aol.com or call 410-8278100.
“Money raised goes toward the the building fund,” Anthony said.
The Grasonville Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1958, and the current firehouse is the only one it has known.
Last year, the architectural firm of Manns Woodward Studios in Baltimore created a concept drawing of what a new Grasonville firehouse might look like. It would be about 18,00019,000 square feet, compared with about 6,000 square feet in the existing firehouse.
The cost for the new fire house is estimated at $4 million, Anthony said. So far, they have about $450,000 in the building fund. They’d like to get $1 million to $1.5 million in the bank to begin looking at financing.
Fundraising is pretty much ongoing, he said. After the golf tournament, the fire department will hold its annual Bull and Oyster Roast from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at VFW Post 7464, 203 VFW Ave., Grasonville. The menu includes all-you-can-eat fried oysters, oysters on the half shell, beef and beer. Tickets are $40 per person. For tickets call Phyllis Black at 443-239-9544 or the firehouse at 410-827-8100.
