CHESTERTOWN — Jacobus Jan Beckering died Sept. 23, 2016 in Chestertown. He was 82.
Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, on June 10, 1934, he was the son of the late Herman W. Beckering and Dorothea Bruinwold Riedel Beckering. He attended Baarns Lyceum and gradu- ated in 1953. He received his mechanical engineering degree from Higher Technical School in Haarlem, Netherlands. He started his career at General Motors in Paris, France where he met his future wife, Helen Robinson, who was also working in Paris. They were married on Sept. 5, 1959 and returned to the U.S. in 1960 where he began working for Black & Decker in Maryland and later in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. In addition, Mr. Beckering worked with Sunbeam in Chicago, Robeson in New York and Steelcase in Grand Rapids, Mich., from where he retired in 1998 and moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. During his career, he was responsible for many patents for creating such products for Black & Decker as the cordless tools and the Workmate.
Mr. Beckering was a member of Rotary International, being active in St. Michaels and Chestertown, Grand Rapids, and Brockville, Ontario. A lifelong sailor, he also was commodore of the Brockville Yacht Club in Ontario, Canada.
In addition to his wife, Helen Beckering of Chestertown, he is survived by his daughters, Laura F. Beckering Cooke (George) of Old Greenwich, Conn. and Dorothea L. Beckering Crescenze (Paul) of Chestertown; his sons, Jan Dereck H. Beckering of Germantown and Thomas W.K. Beckering (Jeanette) of Little Britain, Ontario, Canada; one sister, Francina van Arkel Beckering of Lochem, Netherlands; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will be receiving friends and family at their home in Chestertown from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Burial will be private.
