Ja­cobus Beck­er­ing

CH­ESTER­TOWN — Ja­cobus Jan Beck­er­ing died Sept. 23, 2016 in Ch­ester­town. He was 82.

Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, on June 10, 1934, he was the son of the late Her­man W. Beck­er­ing and Dorothea Bru­in­wold Riedel Beck­er­ing. He at­tended Baarns Lyceum and gradu- ated in 1953. He re­ceived his me­chan­i­cal en­gi­neer­ing de­gree from Higher Tech­ni­cal School in Haar­lem, Netherlands. He started his ca­reer at Gen­eral Mo­tors in Paris, France where he met his fu­ture wife, He­len Robin­son, who was also work­ing in Paris. They were mar­ried on Sept. 5, 1959 and re­turned to the U.S. in 1960 where he be­gan work­ing for Black & Decker in Mary­land and later in Brockville, On­tario, Canada. In ad­di­tion, Mr. Beck­er­ing worked with Sun­beam in Chicago, Robe­son in New York and Steel­case in Grand Rapids, Mich., from where he re­tired in 1998 and moved to the East­ern Shore of Mary­land. Dur­ing his ca­reer, he was re­spon­si­ble for many patents for cre­at­ing such prod­ucts for Black & Decker as the cord­less tools and the Work­mate.

Mr. Beck­er­ing was a mem­ber of Ro­tary In­ter­na­tional, be­ing ac­tive in St. Michaels and Ch­ester­town, Grand Rapids, and Brockville, On­tario. A life­long sailor, he also was com­modore of the Brockville Yacht Club in On­tario, Canada.

In ad­di­tion to his wife, He­len Beck­er­ing of Ch­ester­town, he is sur­vived by his daugh­ters, Laura F. Beck­er­ing Cooke (Ge­orge) of Old Green­wich, Conn. and Dorothea L. Beck­er­ing Crescenze (Paul) of Ch­ester­town; his sons, Jan Dereck H. Beck­er­ing of Ger­man­town and Thomas W.K. Beck­er­ing (Jeanette) of Lit­tle Bri­tain, On­tario, Canada; one sis­ter, Francina van Arkel Beck­er­ing of Lochem, Netherlands; nine grand­chil­dren; and five great-grand­chil­dren.

The fam­ily will be re­ceiv­ing friends and fam­ily at their home in Ch­ester­town from noon to 3 p.m. Satur­day, Oct. 1. Burial will be pri­vate.

In lieu of flow­ers, the fam­ily asks that con­tri­bu­tions be made to a char­ity of your choice in his name.
