John R. (Dick) Wha­ley III

CEN­TRE­VILLE — John R. (Dick) Wha­ley III of Cen­tre­ville, MD, died at Com­pass Re­gional Hospice House on Oc­to­ber 2, 2016. Born on April 2, 1932, he was the son of the late John R. Wha­ley Jr. and Rachel Man­drell Wha­ley Carter of Carmichael. Dick was a grad­u­ate of Cen­tre­ville High School in 1949 and at­tended Sal­is­bury State Teach­ers Col­lege.

Dick had a life­long in­ter­est in agri­cul­ture. He was most proud of his con­tri­bu­tions to the ge­netic de­vel­op­ment of the An­gus beef cat­tle breed, while at Wye Plan­ta­tion where he was farm man­ager and later with his own herd, Wha­ley An­gus.

Dick served ex­ec­u­tively with The Na­tional Cat­tle­mans As­so­ci­a­tion, Amer­i­can An­gus As­so­ci­a­tion, Mary­land An­gus As­so­ci­a­tion and the Cer­ti­fied An­gus Beef Council. He was a mem­ber of St. Pauls Church, the Cen­tre­ville Lions Club and Queen Anne’s County Sports­man’s Club.

A true na­tive Eastern Shore­man, Dick en­joyed sail­ing, hunt­ing, fish­ing and breed­ing Ch­e­sa­peake Bay Re­triev­ers.

Dick mar­ried the late Su­san P. Draper on Feb. 27, 1954. The cou­ple made their home in Queen­stown where they raised three daugh­ters. He is sur­vived by Anne W. Wha­ley, Su­san P. Wha­ley, Ju­lia M. W. Allen, son-in-law Stu­art R. Allen, his beloved grand­chil­dren, Caro­line and hus­band Chad Du­pere; Kather­ine; Peter; and brother Carl­ton L. Wha­ley.

The fam­ily will re­ceive friends on Wed­nes­day, Oct. 12, from 5-7 p.m. at the Fel­lows, Helfen­bein & New­nam Fu­neral Home, P.A. in Cen­tre­ville. A fu­neral is planned at St. Paul’s Epis­co­pal Church in Cen­tre­ville on Thurs­day, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. Hon­orary pall­bear­ers will be Peter W. Allen, David H. Wha­ley, J. Troy Wha­ley and Ed­ward C. Draper.
