John R. (Dick) Whaley III
CENTREVILLE — John R. (Dick) Whaley III of Centreville, MD, died at Compass Regional Hospice House on October 2, 2016. Born on April 2, 1932, he was the son of the late John R. Whaley Jr. and Rachel Mandrell Whaley Carter of Carmichael. Dick was a graduate of Centreville High School in 1949 and attended Salisbury State Teachers College.
Dick had a lifelong interest in agriculture. He was most proud of his contributions to the genetic development of the Angus beef cattle breed, while at Wye Plantation where he was farm manager and later with his own herd, Whaley Angus.
Dick served executively with The National Cattlemans Association, American Angus Association, Maryland Angus Association and the Certified Angus Beef Council. He was a member of St. Pauls Church, the Centreville Lions Club and Queen Anne’s County Sportsman’s Club.
A true native Eastern Shoreman, Dick enjoyed sailing, hunting, fishing and breeding Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.
Dick married the late Susan P. Draper on Feb. 27, 1954. The couple made their home in Queenstown where they raised three daughters. He is survived by Anne W. Whaley, Susan P. Whaley, Julia M. W. Allen, son-in-law Stuart R. Allen, his beloved grandchildren, Caroline and husband Chad Dupere; Katherine; Peter; and brother Carlton L. Whaley.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 5-7 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville. A funeral is planned at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Centreville on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. Honorary pallbearers will be Peter W. Allen, David H. Whaley, J. Troy Whaley and Edward C. Draper.
