Don’t let them take your votes
I am struck by Commissioner Jim Moran’s reasoning that, since voting for the General Assembly is by district only, then that should work for Queen Anne’s County’s Commission as well, reducing our votes to two instead of the current five.
Having watched Maryland’s General “Asylum” in Annapolis since about 1985, I’ve seen the Eastern Shore, Southern, and Western Maryland being gerrymandered and squeezed almost into oblivion by such perpetual power honchos as Thomas “Mike” Miller, Senate President since 1987(!) and Michael Busch, A.A. Co., since 2003.
No, Jim, I don’t think we’re getting our fair share.
As to Charlie Rhodes’ concern about commissioner “turnover”; personally, I am thrilled with Queen Anne’s voters’ ability to “term limit” our County Commissioners.
Look, for instance, at our endless, expensive battle with an earlier commission’s decision, (in the final vote of their terms) to approve Hovnanian’s grand plan for most of the north shore of Kent Island! Or the six figure salaries, commissioner approved, for some county employees, without notification to taxpayers.
Some of those commissioners tried to run again – but voters stopped them. Could we have done that without citizens of every district voting? I doubt it.
Don’t let them take away your vote, folks. It’s the only weapon you have! BETTYE SPEED
