FREDERICKTOWN — “Vital Spark,” the first myster y-thriller in the Chesapeake Tugboat Murders series, by Leah Devlin, was released this week from Penmore Press.

The modern pirate adventure takes place in the fictional village of River Glen, located between Chestertown and Bohemia River.

Fisheries ecologist Alex Allaway is thrilled to have landed a job running a small marine station in her hometown on the Chesapeake, but when she returns home to surprise her grandfather with her good news, she discovers him dead, a bloody dagger in his heart.

His clenched fist grasps a piece of pirate gold and a cryptic map with her name on it.

Aboard his tugboat, Alex searches the Chesapeake for answers and pursues a treasure that belonged to a distant relative, the notorious pirate Giles Blood-hand. But a rival pirate family is also looking for the bounty and thinks nothing of dispatching Alex when they discover she’s in the way.

Vital Spark draws readers into a world where ancient feuds lurk beneath hidden waterways.
