Why are they protesting?
In this post-election time after the victory of Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, I am not sure that I quite understand all of the protests around the country over Trump’s election. I’m not happy with his election and would have been even more unhappy if Hillary had won, but the fact is, he is our president-elect and will go into office in January whether you like it or not. And the idea of seeing high school kids, who are not even old enough to vote, out waving placards and signs in protest seems rather silly to me. All this protesting is not going to change the election outcome.
ARMISTICE DAY GAL
Had a most pleasant telephone call the other day from Frances Conley, out Ruthsburg way. Ms. Conley was my go-to lady when I was editor of the RO years ago whenever I needed any information about Ruthsburg. She could always be depended on to find me answers.
She called me the other day to tell me she enjoys the column and wanted to say that she has a rather unusual birthday. She was born on the 11th hour, the 11th day of the 11th month in 1926. I said, that is rather unusual — so I offered her a belated birthday greetings. She said her children gave her a big 90th birthday party. I said I hope she was well, because she is still two years behind me in years, and that I hoped both of us will be around to say Happy Birthday again next year.
NEW BRIDGE BOSS
I read in the papers the other day we have a new administrator for the Bay Bridges. Richard Jaramillo said in the article that his top priority is safety and security, and that right now he is “loving it and enjoying myself.”
I noted also in the story that the traffic has increased quite a bit since the first span opened in 1952. In that first year, traffic volume in both directions was 870,000. In the last fiscal year 2015, the traffic volume was 25.7 million, in both directions on both spans, as the second one opened in 1973.
And it will keep on going up, so where are we going to build that third span? Maybe I’ll ask the new administrator what he thinks!
