New CASA volunteers sworn in
CENTREVILLE — On Thursday, Dec. 15, with the Honorable Thomas G. Ross of Queen Anne’s County Circuit Court presiding, eight individuals were sworn in as new Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers for children.
CASA staff and board members, as well as the family and friends of the new advocates, gathered in the Queen Anne’s County Circuit Courthouse to support the newest Officers of the Court, who will advocate for the best interest of children under court protection because of abuse, neglect or abandonment.
Ross warmly welcomed the new Court Appointed Special Advocates Kristen Greer, JoAnn Kowalski, Robert Neumer, Joyce Ordun, Sharon Robinson, Norm St. Landau, Laurinda Serafin and William Thomas, expressing his delight that Queen Anne’s County children are now served by CASA of the Mid-Shore. Ross stressed the impor tance of CASA’s work with children and stated that the CASA court reports are highly valued by both himself and Magistrate Jean Meta.
Court Appointed Special Advocates attempt to identify specific needs of each child for the court, advocate for service provision to meet those needs, and assist in seeking a permanent resolution for each child’s life as quickly and safely as possible.
Most importantly, the CASAs get to know the child and frequently become one of the most consistent adults in the child’s life. “It’s a fact that we can’t change what has already happened in the lives of the children that we ser ve, but we can certainly affect the future. Our program strives to ensure that all children under court protection due to maltreatment receive needed services and a safe, permanent home to assist them in growing to their full potential,” Robin Davenport, Executive Director of the CASA of the Mid-Shore.
