game, against a Class 1A foe in Colonel, which has a losing record.
The Warriors did, however, shoot the lights out in that 69-50 win a few days back; if they can continue to do that, they’ll prosper. Three-point shots might not get made as often, but they get blocked far less than layups.
The best 1A team right now has to be Washington, whose only loss is to Decatur on Dec. 19. The Jaguars have beaten up a couple of bigger schools in James M. Bennett and Wi-Hi, and also laid a double-digit loss on Pocomoke. At 5-1, they have the best record in the Bayside in 1A schools, and considering their schedule thus far, I’d have to put them second.
Third would be Parkside, in a tie with the Snow Hill team that beat them by a point two weeks ago. Fifth, let’s go with Crisfield. With wins over small schools but a couple of blowout losses to bigger ones (Wi-Hi and Decatur), the Crabbers look to be a notch above the next team on the list, Kent County.
The Trojans lost to the Crabbers a few days ago, but right now would probably be the best team in the North, with Kent Island slightly ahead of the Easton team they just edged by one point on Wednesday in Stevensville.
In ninth, let’s go with Wi-Hi, then Bennett rounding out the top 10. Pocomoke, then North Caroline and Queen Anne’s give us a baker’s dozen, and realistically, rankings can stop there. The remaining squads need to have much better months in January than in December to move out of the third division.
So there’s where we stand right now; expect early January to give us some more excitement, and some big games right after we celebrate perhaps our most pointless national holiday, the one where we change our calendar every year. (Thank God we don’t all use a page-a-day calendar or nobody would ever work.)
Jan. 3 sees Kent County visit Easton, Washington at North Caroline, Parkside visiting Pocomoke, and Crisfield at Snow Hill. There should be a little more movement in the poll come mid-January, as we reach the halfway point of the season.
