Church Hill VFD installs officers
CHURCH HILL — The Church Hill Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, Jan. 7, held its annual banquet and installation of officers for 2017.
Kenneth N. Rhodes, outgoing president, led the program. He was replaced as president by Brett M. Vanzant for 2017. Rhodes has served five one-year terms in that position, including four terms consecutively.
Rhodes gave a speech where he emphasized his accomplishments and asked the members to remember those who came before them. Looking back over his terms in office, he said, “We had our highs and lows, mostly our highs.”
The heating system was replaced with a new one that will last 50 years or more and the first floor bathroom was renovated. Besides the annexation planned for the site, the parking lot was repaved.
But the biggest accomplishment, he said, was putting the fire department in
better financial shape. It’s the best financial situation in the department’s history, he said, but added that he doesn’t take full credit for it. It was a collective effort, he said
Rhodes also emphasized the diversity of the membership, ranging in professions, race and gender, and he praised the membership’s volunteer efforts. “When in a crisis, they leave their duties [at work] and do duties they aren’t paid for,” he said.
Vanzant commented about his new term as president. He will oversee the construction of the new addition, which will include four more bays.
Besides Vanzant, five other people were installed as administrative officers for 2017 as follows: D.J. Whitby Jr., vice president; Rosemarie Lobely-Vanzant, secretary; Jaclyn Nuckels, assistant secretary; Sandra A. Reed, treasurer; and Francis D. Jester, assistant treasurer.

Yiannakis, second assistant chief; Brett M. Vanzant, captain; Robert S. Finck, captain; D.J. Whitby Jr., lieutenant; Donald W. Hodges Jr., lieutenant; Brian G. Collins, chief engineer; and James D.
