Small Works Exhibit opens at QA Arts Council
CENTREVILLE — An opening reception for the Small Works Exhibit was held Jan. 6 at the Queen Anne’s County Centre for the Arts in Centreville. Several artists were present and guests were invited to purchase chances to win their favorite piece of art.
Executive Director for the Arts Council, Rick Strittmater described the entries as any work of art, in any medium that would effectively fit in a 9x9x9 space. Entries included photography, watercolor, oils, sketches, pottery, wood carvings and jewelry.
One entrant, artist Ritze Miller of Oxford, submitted her photograph titled, “In the Company of Women”. Miller’s specialty is capturing subjects in such a setting that invokes a vintage feel, a “vintage vignette”, describes Miller. Her subjects in this photograph were participating in a sketching workshop outdoors in Oxford. The women had just melded together so perfectly, that capturing them on film seemed the thing to do, said Miller.
Miller said she loves being a part of the Arts Council in Centreville.
James Malaro, Centreville, is also an artist and photographer who entered work in the Small Works exhibit. His work titled, “It’s about Time” is a digitial composite of three layered images — a woman’s silhoutte is captured in a vintage timepiece, suspended against a spider’s web. The photograph required more than a second look and captured the attention of several guests.
Said Strattmater, “We received many entrants, more than 80 entries total...it is a good showing...artists supporting the arts.”
The exhibit will be on display from now until the end of February. The proceeds from the ticket sales go to supporting the Arts Council, said Strattmater. The grand drawing and artists recognition reception where winners will be announced will be held Saturday, Feb. 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Centre for the Arts.
