Gunston announces campus expansion
CENTREVILLE — The Gunston School has announced a campus expansion including the construction of a Waterfront Athletics Complex.
In December, Gunston purchased a 3.5-acre parcel of waterfront property directly adjacent to the eastern side of the campus, according to a news release. This purchase, which adds both campus housing and additional field space, will allow Gunston to immediately enhance its athletic facilities.
The acquisition of expanded campus housing will allow a current campus residence to be transformed into a 3000-square-foot facility that includes a fitness and workout space for all students, team rooms, provisions for environmental teaching and learning and event facilities for Gunston’s crew and sailing teams.
The property also will support Gunston’s growing outdoor classroom and summer programming needs. This summer, YMCA Camp Gunston and Horizons at Gunston School will serve over 1,000 young men and women from around the region.
With Gunston’s enrollment having grown over 40 percent since 2010, the new property will support the school’s long-term “footprint” expansion.
“It is an exciting time at Gunston, and let me acknowledge the vision and commitment of our Board of Trustees. With growing enrollment, expanding academic and athletic programs, and a remarkably talented student body and faculty, we believe that the next few years herald a further strengthening of our 107-year old school. The goal is to have this space operational by the 2017-2018 school year,” said Headmaster John Lewis in a statement.
Gunston is an independent co-ed college preparatory school serving grades 9 through 12. To learn more about Gunston, visit gunston.org.
