CHESTER — The owner of Splendid Upscale Consignment Boutique is holding a “decorate your bra contest” with the proceeds going to a nonprofit foundation to aid the fight against breast cancer.

As a fundraiser for Avon Foundation for Women and a walkathon in May, Splendid owner Melanie Drake hopes to raise $1,800 by holding a decorating bra contest where women decorate their bras which are put on display at Splendid at 100 Helfenbein Lane, Chester.

Enter the contest for a $10 or more donation. Businesses can also create an entry and promote themselves in the contest for a donation of $20 or more. People can vote on their favorite bra for $1.

Drake has extended the date to enter the bras until March 15. Voting begins on March 4, but is also extended to end on April 15. The grand prize winner will be announced on April 18. Included in the gifts to the winner will be $100 gift card from Glam Salon, a free manicure from Topaz nails and a 60-minute massage from Well-Being Massage Therapy.

“I would like to invite the public to come in even if they didn’t have a bra and vote,” she said.

As of Feb. 23, only one bra has been entered into the contest. It came from Drake’s daughter, Valerie Drake. But people have donated money without doing the bra contest. A total of $813 has been raised toward her goal so far.

Drake is required to raise $1,800 as part of her participation in the Avon 39 to End Breast Cancer walk in Washington, D.C. Four other people will be going as part of her team and each are required to raise that much money for the Avon Foundation for Women.

The 39-mile walk will be held over a two-day period, May 6 and May 7, with 26 miles on the first day and 13 on the second day. Walkers will go through National Park grounds, including the U.S. Capital and the White House and they will see the Martin Luther King Jr. monument, Georgetown, Chinatown and Capitol Hill.

Nationwide, there will be seven walks in as many cities. In addition to the one in Washington, there will be walks from April to October of this year in Houston, Chicago, Boston, San Fransisco, Santa Barbara and New York.

Volunteers also are needed to hand out flags and metals at the end and to pick up people who can’t complete the walk. Drake has been exercising at Club One in Chester, but maybe she can exercise outside if the weather is better.

She wanted to join the walk and hold the fundraiser because “I have some close friends and Avon team members who are breast cancer survivors. This terrible disease can affect any of us. I’m in to end it.”

Online donations can be made to by clicking the word “donate” and put in Melanie Drake’s name and you will see her team name “Shore Beats Cancer,” who is registered to walk.

For the same cause, there also will be a quarter auction on March 11 at Ruthsburg Community Center on Damsontown Road in Queen Anne. Doors open at noon and games start at 1 p.m.
