Friends provide new furniture for KI Library
CENTREVILLE — The members and supporters of the Friends of Queen Anne’s County Library have given to the Friends through membership in the organization, attending fundraising events, buying used books in the libraries’ lobbies and at the annual used book sale. These donations allowed the Friends to fully fund new furniture for a popular seating area in the Kent Island librar y.
The seating area, located among the library’s periodicals and adjacent to its computer workstations, is highly trafficked by senior citizens and seniors at nearby Kent Island High School, and had not been updated in several years. It is the hope of the friends that this improvement to the librar y will enhance its position as a true community hub for the people of Queen Anne’s County.
“While we are appreciative that the county commissioners continue to provide us with the funds we need to operate the libraries in our county, there are always things that we’d like to have or do that just can’t fit in our annual budget. Replacing the worn-out furniture in this area was one such item, and we are delighted that the Friends were able to make this donation,” said John Walden, librar y director.
“In recent years, the Friends have been proud to support funding for programs, like the Saturday Arts Program and the Summer Reading Program and for professional development for staff. The donation of new furniture represents a new way that the Friends are supporting the mission of the library and — by extension — the community, and we’re excited to grow in this direction,” said Mary Jackson, Friends of the Library president.
The Friends of Queen Anne’s County Library is a voluntary nonprofit organization, with more than 70 members. Anyone interested in joining the Friends and helping the group support the library is invited to join at the Friend’s upcoming annual meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 6, at Kent Island library.
The meeting will feature an update on the Friends’ activities for the past year, remarks from John Walden and from library board president Kristen Pironis, and a presentation and discussion on the history of Kent Island with local author Brent Lewis.
Information on Friends’ membership and the annual meeting is available at FriendsOfQACLibrary.org.
