Ladson leads Skipjacks to national tournament
COLUMBIA — Sophomore guard Janice Ladson has been talking about playing in this year’s NJCAA Division II national tournament since before Chesapeake College’s women’s basketball season started.
Now she can stop talking about it, and start packing for it.
Ladson scored 11 of her gamehigh 20 points in the fourth quarter, rallying her top-seeded Skipjacks to a 59-55 victory over second-seeded Garrett College (22-5) in Sunday’s Region XX title game at Howard Community College. That victor y qualified the Skipjacks (18-8) for the national tournament, which will take place March 21-25 in Harrison, Ark.
“I wanted my team to experience nationals,” Ladson said of her fourth-quarter heroics, which helped erase a 46-40 lead Garrett took into the final quarter. “That’s been our goal since Day 1 this season.”
“She just put the team on her back in the fourth quarter,” Chesapeake head coach Gwen Barnes said of Ladson, who was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. “She’s been our leader the last two seasons.”
While no other Skipjacks reached double figures, Ladson still had plenty of help.
