MedChi ap­plauds Gen­eral As­sem­bly ac­tion on opi­oids

AN­NAPO­LIS — MedChi, The Maryland State Med­i­cal So­ci­ety, ap­plauds The Maryland Gen­eral As­sem­bly for tak­ing ac­tion March 24 on two pro­pos­als that stand out as com­pre­hen­sive real so­lu­tions ad­dress­ing the opi­oid cri­sis and urge fi­nal pas­sage of both leg­isla­tive Acts.

Gene Ransom, MedChi CEO, ex­plained, “The Start Talk­ing Maryland Act and the Heroin and Opi­oid Pre­ven­tion Ef­fort (HOPE) and Treat­ment Act of 2017 rep­re­sent a com­pre­hen­sive, pre­ven­tion and treat­ment-fo­cused ap­proach.” Ransom fur­ther said, “MedChi along with the AMA strongly sup­ports pro­vi­sions of the bills that cre­ate new treat­ment cen­ters for pa­tients with sub­stance use dis­or­ders and in­creased em­pha­sis on youth ed­u­ca­tion to help chil­dren un­der­stand the risks of opi­oid mis­use and il­licit drug use.”
