ESIAC singles champion and player of the year Ashley Wagner graduated, as did Marina Wilson, one half of the ESIAC’s girls’ doubles championship team. The other half of that tandem, senior Anna Granger, returns after going 11-0 in singles play last year. Senior Miles Clemmer was 11-1 at No. 4 last season, and moves up to the second rung behind Granger.
Head coach Tom White has seniors Megan Beane and Kate Schisler at Nos. 3 and 4, and figures to give Sarah Morris, Dolly Rath and Nicole Wachinko plenty of court time.
The boys’ team went 12-3 in its first season in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association, but graduated last year’s No. 3, Brandon Wass, and topseeded William Rath, who moved to Florida.
Michael Morrell moves to the top spot on the ladder after going 12-5 last season at No. 2. Aaron Prince and Caleb Lovell will also play singles, while White will use Adam Leister and Max Hardesty at No. 1 doubles and Dylan Christopherson and Conor Mullaney at No. 2. Gunston School Despite the graduation of ESIAC player of the year David Rogers, head coach Diane Johnson likes what she has seen from his boys’ team this early season.
“I’m more than pleased,” said Johnson of a team that could prove to be Worcester Prep’s chief competition in the ESIAC. “I think we’ll do well.”
Junior Tyler Judd tops the singles ladder and is followed by Sam Umidi (So.), Nat Vivian (Jr.), Mason Rudolfs (Fr.) and Brooks Armstrong (So.). The Herons have Steven Goss (Jr.) and Cubby Zhou (Jr.) at No. 1 doubles, and Keller Evans (Fr.) and Nick Li (Jr.) at 2.
Johnson thinks will will be a year of building on the girls’ side, with No. 1 Elaine Jiang (Sr.) leading the ladder of Lila Ingersoll (Jr.), Rose Fan (Jr.), Hope Murphy (Jr.) and Tong Shen (Sr.). Grace Dai (Jr.) and Suzy Li (So.) are at No. 1 doubles, while Joey Zhuo (Fr.) and Vicky Zhou (So.) play at No. 2.
