* * * Congressman Thomas McMillen, D-4th, has proposed legislation that will extend the deadline for the destruction of the U.S. stockpiles of chemical weapons and provide more time to consider alternative options to incineration at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.
Under the legislation, called the Incineration Alternative Act, the deadline for the disposal of chemical weapons would be extended from 1999 until the year 2010. * * * When Gaylord Clark first took office in December to finish departing Town Commissioner James Orange’s term, he said the six-month term would help him decide whether he will stay in local government.
Six months later, Clark said there’s too many things happening to step down, so he is running in next Monday’s election. There are 224 registered voters in Sudlersville. Clark is running unopposed.
“I’m ready for another three years,” he said. “I couldn’t get out now, there’s too much going on in town.” *** A Chester man was found guilty in District Court Monday of striking and killing with his car a 14-year-old boy four days before Christmas.
Judge John Clark III found Marcus Lovette, 19, guilty of vehicular manslaughter, homicide with a motor vehicle while under the influence, driving while under the influence, giving a false statement to police and other traffic violations. He faces up to 11 years in prison.
Lovette was driving a 1976 Mercedes Benz on Cemetery Road in Grasonville on Dec. 21 when he struck Jermaine Burke at 8:30 p.m. Burke, who was walking toward a dance at the Sons of Abraham club with a friend, who killed instantly.
