San­tos Bates hits mile­stone; Lions into East fi­nal

CEN­TRE­VILLE — The Queen Anne’s County High girls’ lacrosse team thrashed North Caro­line, 20-2, Mon­day in the Class 2A/1A East Sec­tion II fi­nal, hand­ing head coach Pene­lope San­tos Bates her 100th ca­reer win.

McKenna Blick (as­sist) and Pay­ton Batchelder led the way with four goals apiece, while Tay­lor Shep­pard and Kylie Tu­low­itzy (ground­ball) each reg­is­tered hat tricks. The Lions also re­ceived strong out­ings from Kai­ley Boomer (two goals, as­sist), Emma Feaga (two goals) and Cal­lie Craw­ford (two goals, one ground­ball).

Amanda Smith, Sarah Bowyer and Kath­leen Dono­van each net­ted one goal. Grace Swee­tak (two grounders), Becca Clay (two) Emma Caulk (one) and Sam Grze­sik (one) each fac­tored into the ball con­trol game.

Queen Anne’s will play Sec­tion I cham­pion South­ern-Anne Arun­del in the re­gion fi­nal this evening, seek­ing its ninth straight ap­pear­ance in the state play­offs. San­tos Bates is now 100-27-3 in her nine-year ca­reer with the pro­gram, which in­cludes eight North Bay­side cham­pi­onships, six Bay­side Con­fer­ence crowns and two state fi­nal berths, in ad­di­tion to the eight state tour­na­ment bids.
