Santos Bates hits milestone; Lions into East final
CENTREVILLE — The Queen Anne’s County High girls’ lacrosse team thrashed North Caroline, 20-2, Monday in the Class 2A/1A East Section II final, handing head coach Penelope Santos Bates her 100th career win.
McKenna Blick (assist) and Payton Batchelder led the way with four goals apiece, while Taylor Sheppard and Kylie Tulowitzy (groundball) each registered hat tricks. The Lions also received strong outings from Kailey Boomer (two goals, assist), Emma Feaga (two goals) and Callie Crawford (two goals, one groundball).
Amanda Smith, Sarah Bowyer and Kathleen Donovan each netted one goal. Grace Sweetak (two grounders), Becca Clay (two) Emma Caulk (one) and Sam Grzesik (one) each factored into the ball control game.
Queen Anne’s will play Section I champion Southern-Anne Arundel in the region final this evening, seeking its ninth straight appearance in the state playoffs. Santos Bates is now 100-27-3 in her nine-year career with the program, which includes eight North Bayside championships, six Bayside Conference crowns and two state final berths, in addition to the eight state tournament bids.
