Cal­ico Fields to host ‘Laven­dar Week­end’

MILLING­TON — Cal­ico Fields laven­der farm, lo­cated in north­ern Queen Anne’s County, will host its an­nual “Laven­der Week­end” on Satur­day, June 10, and Sun­day, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Cal­ico Fields wel­comes guests to view the laven­der field in bloom. Cut your own laven­der, try a laven­der tea or le­mon­ade, and sam­ple some of the prod­ucts made ex­clu­sively by Cal­ico Fields at the laven­der shop.

Lo­cated be­tween Sudlersville and Milling­ton, on Mary­land Route 313, Cal­ico Fields grows laven­der and aro­nia berry and raises honey­bees. Cel­e­brat­ing its 12th year, Cal­ico Fields grows a num­ber of dif­fer­ent va­ri­eties of laven­der, which is in­te­grated into its ex­ten­sive prod­uct line.

At Cal­ico Fields, vis­i­tors will find a laven­der shop, a va­ri­ety of flower and veg­etable gar­dens, and a wood­land trail to Uni­corn Lake. With a com­mit­ment to en­vi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion, Cal­ico Fields is chem­i­cal and pes­ti­cide free, pow­ered by so­lar power, and em­pha­sizes sus­tain­able agri­cul­ture and habi­tat pro­tec­tion.

This year, Cal­ico Fields will have two lo­cal ven­dors as part of Laven­der Week­end. Til­mon Is­land win­ery will fea­ture wine made from Cal­ico Fields aro­nia berries. Ad­di­tion­ally, Lock­briar Farms Ice Cream Com­pany will of­fer two fla­vors of Laven­der ice cream, also made with laven­der from the farm.

“We’re re­ally look­ing for­ward to Laven­der Week­end,” said Cal­ico Fields own­ers Jay and Christa Fal­stad. “We love shar­ing our farm as part of our an­nual event.”

In ad­di­tion to laven­der, aro­nia and honey­bees, Cal­ico Fields grows milk­weed specif­i­cally for monarch but­ter­flies and has a va­ri­ety of dif­fer­ent habi­tats aimed at sup­port­ing pol­li­nat­ing species through­out the farm. The wood­land part of the prop­erty is pre­served for wildlife habi­tat and is pro­tected un­der a Mary­land For­est Crop man­age­ment pro­gram.

Cal­ico Fields is “BayWise” cer­ti­fied by the Queen Anne’s County Mas­ter Gard­ner pro­gram for its sus­tain­able prac­tices aimed at im­prov­ing wa­ter qual­ity and help­ing the en­vi­ron­ment.

Ad­mis­sion is free. Pets are wel­come, but must be kept on a leash.
