STEVENSVILLE — This summer five young women from Kent Island will travel to Transylvania, Romania, to volunteer as counselors at the Transylvania Leadership Camp. The camp offers American and Romanian teens the opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures and learn principles of American democracy and leadership.

This will be the second year traveling to Romania to volunteer at the camp for sisters Caroline, Victoria and Grace Walworth. Caroline and Victoria are both 17; Grace is 15. This year they will be joined by their friends Grace Park, 17, and Natalie Knight-Griifin, 15. Last summer Kent Island residents Brice O’Malley, 17, and Nathan Driver, 17, brought their outdoor and sports skills to the camp.

“We had a great time last year, and what we learned about Romania and how other students our age view the world was really valuable. We also had a chance to learn about Eastern European history and what it was like to live under Communism. I don’t think a lot of other American teens get that kind of opportunity,” said Victoria.

Transylvania Leadership Camp is located in the Carpathian Mountains, an hour outside the beautiful medieval university city of ClujNapoca. At the camp, American and Romanian campers and counselors participate in leadership seminars, perform community service in local villages and take part in traditional summer camp activities such as hiking, swimming and arts and crafts. Campers receive Leadership Certificates and Community Service Awards from Transylvania College, an international school affiliated with the camp.

“We have a few more openings for campers and counselors,” said Alex Walworth, executive director of the camp. “This is an excellent opportunity for your child to learn leadership skills and gain community service credit. It also really stand out on a college resume.”
