Artists in town for Plein Air Eas­ton

EAS­TON — Plein Air Eas­ton, the coun­try’s largest paint­ing com­pe­ti­tion and fes­ti­val, is un­der­way, and the grand prize win­ner will be an­nounced Fri­day evening, July 21, fol­lowed by the Quick Draw com­pe­ti­tion Satur­day, July 22.

In the mean­time, the 58 ju­ried artists have ar­rived and will be paint­ing the land­scape of Del­marva and Tal­bot County for the next 11 days. Most will start out at the Friends of Plein Air Meet the Artists Din­ner paint-out on Satur­day af­ter­noon and evening, July 15. It is a tick­eted event that is open to the public, and it takes place on a dif­fer­ent lo­cal pri­vate es­tate ev­ery year.

On Sun­day, July 16, the Ox­ford Busi­ness As­so­ci­a­tion will wel­come the artists to Paint Ox­ford Day. Lo­cal busi­nesses will of­fer spe­cials, and the day will con­clude with live mu­sic, a free re­cep­tion, ex­hi­bi­tion and sale at the Ox­ford Com­mu­nity Cen­ter from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A $1,000 prize will be awarded.

Also this Sun­day, the Avalon Foun­da­tion and Academy Art Mu­seum will present the “His­tory of Plein Air Paint­ing, a Pre­sen­ta­tion” from 2 to 3 p.m. The mu­seum’s se­nior cu­ra­tor, Anke Van Wa­gen­berg, will present a free slide lec­ture.

As the artists cre­ate their im­pres­sions all week long, the Avalon Theatre will host Rise Up Cof­fee and Hill’s Café and Juice Bar with lunch, break­fast and cof­fee avail­able amidst art dis­played in­side. The Avalon will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. ever y day.
