Artists in town for Plein Air Easton
EASTON — Plein Air Easton, the country’s largest painting competition and festival, is underway, and the grand prize winner will be announced Friday evening, July 21, followed by the Quick Draw competition Saturday, July 22.
In the meantime, the 58 juried artists have arrived and will be painting the landscape of Delmarva and Talbot County for the next 11 days. Most will start out at the Friends of Plein Air Meet the Artists Dinner paint-out on Saturday afternoon and evening, July 15. It is a ticketed event that is open to the public, and it takes place on a different local private estate every year.
On Sunday, July 16, the Oxford Business Association will welcome the artists to Paint Oxford Day. Local businesses will offer specials, and the day will conclude with live music, a free reception, exhibition and sale at the Oxford Community Center from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A $1,000 prize will be awarded.
Also this Sunday, the Avalon Foundation and Academy Art Museum will present the “History of Plein Air Painting, a Presentation” from 2 to 3 p.m. The museum’s senior curator, Anke Van Wagenberg, will present a free slide lecture.
As the artists create their impressions all week long, the Avalon Theatre will host Rise Up Coffee and Hill’s Café and Juice Bar with lunch, breakfast and coffee available amidst art displayed inside. The Avalon will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. ever y day.
