Blackwater wins best aged rum
Named Vodka Distillery of the Year
— Blackwater Distilling Inc., Maryland’s oldest and most awarded craft distillery, chooses the competitions it enters carefully, searching for the most recognizable national and international competitions rather than the most likely win. When Blackwater’s spirits do well, like its rum and vodka did this spring at the American Distilling Institute Judging and the New York International Spirits Competition, the team knows they’ve accomplished something.
Blackwater’s Picaroon Dark Rum was awarded “Best in Category: Aged Rum” at the American Distilling Institute Judging 2017.
“The American Distilling Institute competition is rewarding because the field is made up mostly of craft distilleries like ours from all over the U.S. and around the world,” said Christopher Cook, cofounder and CEO. “We’re up against our peers, many of whom are making really creative, innovative spirits of a quality that puts the big guys to shame. To come away with ‘best aged rum’ in that group definitely feels good.”
Blackwater’s Sloop Betty Handcrafted Vodka came away with Gold Medal at the New York International Spirits Competition, which also named Blackwater “Maryland Vodka Distillery of the Year.”
“Sloop Betty is our oldest spirit, and she’s won a number of gold medals in the past,” said Jon Cook, cofounder and COO. “We don’t want to be one of those companies that wins one good medal and then talks it up for the next 10 years. It’s good to know she’s still got it.”
