QACHS Class of 1967 to mark 50th
CENTREVILLE — In the fall of 1966, students from the four feeder schools in Queen Anne’s County, Centreville High School, Kennard High School, Stevensville High School, and Sudlersville High School, began their school year in the newly built Queen Anne’s County Comprehensive High School. This was a year of many firsts: it was the first year of mandated integration; QACHS was on the cutting edge by being an academic and vocational high school; and it was the first year of centralizing all the high school students in the county under one roof.
It was a challenging transition year since the school was not fully completed and students were bused to several locations within Centreville for several months until the school building was usable. Nevertheless, bonds of friendship were forged among the students. This was especially true for the students of Class of 1967 who would spend their last high school year together in what can only be described as “difficult circumstances.” When the students moved into the building in March 1967, parts of the building were still under construction. The bell system was not operable, so the classes changed via boat horns; the auditorium and main office were not functional; there were no athletic playing fields and no paved parking lots. It was truly amazing that, despite these obstacles, the class came together.
The school administration had done some great preparation to build unity and camaraderie among the students. The Class of ’67 met with administrators early on to choose the school colors, mascot, the class ring and yearbook cover and name.
This year marks the 50th graduating class from Queen Anne’s County High School. The school acknowledged this milestone during graduation ceremonies.
