STEVENSVILLE — Sharrin McGrane Jones of Love Point recently returned home to find the outbuilding that maintains her home’s electric, water pump and bathroom facilities destroyed. Jones had been away on business that week, but neighbors told her a loud crash was heard sometime between 9 and 10 p.m. Thursday night, Aug. 10.

The property, at the very end of River view Road, literally “the point” of Love Point, where the Chester River meets the Chesapeake Bay, has been owned by her family since her late father, Saul McGrane, purchased it in 1972. The property at that time had a large seven bedroom, wooden, twostory home on it with a couple out buildings, all built in 1906 by the original owner. The main house caught fire in 1985 and burned to the ground.

A new, simpler home was added to the property the next year.

Of the crash, the driver appeared to be attempting “donuts” at a high rate of speed in the yard, apparently unaware of the outbuilding in the darkness, and in the second loop, crashed directly into the outbuilding, knocking it about 10 inches off its foundation and leaving the building unstable. Parts of the vehicle were left behind, but it appears the driver may have cleaned up some of the vehicle debris.

The outbuilding is a total loss and will have to be razed and removed, Jones said. Cost estimates for removing and replacing it are over $25,000.

Jones is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the individual(s) responsible. She has spoken to many of her neighbors and a report of the incident was filed with the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office, which is continuing the investigation.

“I feel like I’ve been violated that someone, trespassing, has come onto our property and destroyed something that meant a great deal to me. I grew up as a child playing in this small building. It was the only thing left from the original home my father had purchased,” Jones said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office at 410-758-0770.
