Lt. Cmdr. Fred Horatio Gates II, U.S. Navy, husband of Sandra Perry Gates, formerly of Rockland, Maine, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gates of Centreville, died Aug. 19 as a result of an aircraft accident at sea.
Gates was an Operations Officer in Attack Squadron 25 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Coral Sea enroute to Vietnam.
According to Naval sources, Gates was returning from a routine flight and experienced engine failure in his approach to a landing and was forced to ditch his AD Skyraider about a quarter mile astern of the ship. He went down with his plane.
••• Maryland’s two-lane Chesapeake Bay Bridge was tied in knots for about 12 hours Saturday in a king-sized traffic jam that clogged both sides of the span — the worst of the summer.
Nearly 30,000 vehicles crossed the bridge Saturday as a total of 78,516 used the span for the three-day period. This was more than 2,000 over the number using the bridge for the same period last year.
Bridge authorities made the span one-way five times eastbound and two times westbound on Saturday in an effort to alleviate the jam, but the traffic piled up on both sides from 7:37 a.m. to 5:27 p.m.
