Lt. Cmdr. Fred Ho­ra­tio Gates II, U.S. Navy, hus­band of San­dra Perry Gates, for­merly of Rock­land, Maine, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gates of Cen­tre­ville, died Aug. 19 as a re­sult of an air­craft ac­ci­dent at sea.

Gates was an Op­er­a­tions Of­fi­cer in At­tack Squadron 25 aboard the Air­craft Car­rier USS Co­ral Sea en­route to Viet­nam.

Ac­cord­ing to Naval sources, Gates was re­turn­ing from a rou­tine flight and ex­pe­ri­enced en­gine fail­ure in his ap­proach to a land­ing and was forced to ditch his AD Skyraider about a quar­ter mile astern of the ship. He went down with his plane.

••• Mary­land’s two-lane Ch­e­sa­peake Bay Bridge was tied in knots for about 12 hours Satur­day in a king-sized traf­fic jam that clogged both sides of the span — the worst of the sum­mer.

Nearly 30,000 ve­hi­cles crossed the bridge Satur­day as a to­tal of 78,516 used the span for the three-day pe­riod. This was more than 2,000 over the num­ber us­ing the bridge for the same pe­riod last year.

Bridge author­i­ties made the span one-way five times east­bound and two times west­bound on Satur­day in an ef­fort to al­le­vi­ate the jam, but the traf­fic piled up on both sides from 7:37 a.m. to 5:27 p.m.
