Art league an­nounces win­ners of Grafton awards

ST. MICHAELS — Nancy Lee Davis won first place in the St. Michaels Art League’s David Grafton Peo­ple’s Choice awards for its cur­rent ex­hibit, “End­less Sum­mer,” at the A.M. Gravely Gallery.

Grafton, an artist and gallery owner, re­cently passed away, and the league wanted to ac­knowl­edge his con­tri­bu­tions to the com­mu­nity and the arts.

The awards were given Aug. 12 dur­ing a re­cep­tion at the gallery. Win­ners were se­lected by vis­i­tors to the gallery dur­ing the preced- ing week.

Davis won first place for her paint­ing “The Last House.”

George Hamil­ton won sec­ond place, Kathy Kopec won third place, and hon­or­able men­tions went to Mary Viega, Carol McClees and Pat Lang.

Grafton had been a leader in the Tal­bot County arts scene since open­ing Grafton Gal­leries in Eas­ton in 2004. He was an im­pres­sion­is­tic land­scape painter who also pro­duced pas­tels and ab­stracts. He also taught paint­ing classes at his gallery.

In ad­di­tion to be­ing ac­cepted into the 2008 and 2009 Plein Air Eas­ton com­pe­ti­tions, he had pieces placed in pri­vate and cor­po­rate col­lec­tions in more than 25 states, Eng­land, Ger­many, Canada and Nor­way.

“End­less Sum­mer” will con­tinue through Oct. 1. An­other re­cep­tion is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 as part of St. Michaels’ Sec­ond Satur­day events.
