Art league announces winners of Grafton awards
ST. MICHAELS — Nancy Lee Davis won first place in the St. Michaels Art League’s David Grafton People’s Choice awards for its current exhibit, “Endless Summer,” at the A.M. Gravely Gallery.
Grafton, an artist and gallery owner, recently passed away, and the league wanted to acknowledge his contributions to the community and the arts.
The awards were given Aug. 12 during a reception at the gallery. Winners were selected by visitors to the gallery during the preced- ing week.
Davis won first place for her painting “The Last House.”
George Hamilton won second place, Kathy Kopec won third place, and honorable mentions went to Mary Viega, Carol McClees and Pat Lang.
Grafton had been a leader in the Talbot County arts scene since opening Grafton Galleries in Easton in 2004. He was an impressionistic landscape painter who also produced pastels and abstracts. He also taught painting classes at his gallery.
In addition to being accepted into the 2008 and 2009 Plein Air Easton competitions, he had pieces placed in private and corporate collections in more than 25 states, England, Germany, Canada and Norway.
“Endless Summer” will continue through Oct. 1. Another reception is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 as part of St. Michaels’ Second Saturday events.
The gallery, 408 S. Talbot St., is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sundays. ----Online: www.graftonart.com www.smartleague.org www.amgravelygallery. com
