Slacum was admitted to the hospital with bilateral pneumonia on Aug. 25. He subsequently suffered a cardiac arrest and has remained on a ventilator in intensive care. While his prognosis has improved, he is critically ill.

Slacum is a firefighter at Unit 7 in Odenton, a volunteer with Heroes For The Homeland, a volunteer and board member of First Light For First Responders and an emergency room technician at a local hospital.

Justin Davis, founder of First Light for First Responders, called Salcum “an amazing servant to the community.”

“He has impacted countless members of our community with his skill, compassion and immeasurable sense of duty,” Davis said.
