Sudlersville man charged with attempted murder
SUDLERSVILLE — A Sudlersville man faces charges of attempted murder in a domestic-related incident after deputies responded early Sunday, Sept. 17, to a “check welfare” call in the vicinity of 124 West Main St.
As they arrived about 12:27 a.m., deputies from the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office were flagged down by a woman with obvious physical injuries, police said. The woman, who is from Wilmington, Del., told deputies she had been assaulted by the man living at that address. Deputies later identified the man as Craig Sudler Willis, 46.
Investigators believe the woman, whose identity is not being released due to the nature of the case, suffered repeated physical assault for almost two hours before being able to leave the home and call 911, Lt. Mark Meil said.
During the assault, Willis allegedly threatened the victim with a shotgun, which he fired at or near the woman in the house, Meil said. She was not hit by the shot, he added.
The woman was treated at the scene by Queen Anne’s County Emergency Medical Services and taken by ambulance to University of Mar yland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown for treatment of her injuries, which Meil described as “serious, but not life-threatening.” He said she was expected to be released from the hospital Sunday afternoon.
The woman’s vehicle also was damaged sometime during the incident, windows smashed and body damaged, police said.
While deputies were conducting their investigation, Willis attempted to leave his home but was apprehended shortly and arrested without incident, police said.
Willis was charged with firstdegree attempted murder, seconddegree attempted murder, firstdegree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, false imprisonment, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, malicious destruction of property over $1,000, and malicious destruction of property under $1,000.
Detective Steven Matthews is the lead investigator. He obtained a warrant, and he, Meil and 1st. Sgt. Sonny Jones went back to the home to gather evidence and process the crime scene about 10 a.m. Sunday.
They seized the shotgun and other evidence, Meil said.
Willis was processed at the sheriff’s office, then taken before a District Court commissioner, who order him held pending hearing. Willis is incarcerated at the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center. His preliminary hearing has been set for Oct. 13.
Court records don’t show any prior convictions for domestic violence, but they do show protective orders filed against Willis in 2008 and 2014.
