Fall tourneys offer angling, prizes, and a chance to mingle

Record Observer - - Sports -

Fall is a great time to fish in the Chesapeake Bay region and tournament organizers have filled the calendar with opportunities to win prizes and mingle with fellow anglers. Saturday, October 7, has at least two local tournaments lined up with the first Rod & Reef Slam tourna- ment headquartered at Lowes Wharf Marina in Sherwood and the Chesapeake Bay Kayak Anglers’ Rocktoberfest at Camp Wright on Kent Island.

The CBKA Rocktoberfest is a catch-photorelease tournament benefitting the MakeA-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic and the Coastal Conservation Association of Maryland. Prize divisions are striped bass, white perch, blue crab, and aggregate/slam, and may include lady, youth, senior, and fly fishing. An optional captain’s meeting and potluck begins at 6 p.m. Friday evening with dinner beginning at 7:30.

Anglers can launch at first light on Saturday and the photo check-in runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m with an awards dinner at 4. Anglers must use a kayak, canoe, standup paddleboard, or other angler-powered craft, and battery-powered electric watercraft is also allowed.

The tournament is open to anyone 18 or older. Minors can participate with a signed release from a parent or legal guardian. Complete rules and other tournament information are available on the CBKA website (chesapeakebaykayakanglers.com).

The boundaries for the first Rod & Reef Slam tournament are three restored oyster reefs: Cook’s Point, Harris Creek, and the Tilghman Island. The Grand Prize will be awarded to the highest overall diversity of species caught, then by the collective length of all fish caught.

To register for the tournament, contact Hilary Gibson at hgibson@cbf.org or 410543-1999.

An after-party and awards ceremony will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lowes Wharf Marina & Inn at 21651 Wharf Road in Sherwood. The cost is $50, which includes entry, party food, and give-aways. Youth ages 16 and under may join the action for free with a participating adult. Non-anglers can enjoy the after-party and awards ceremony for $10.

Awards are a Grand Prize and 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place prizes for all divisions: powerboat, kayak, and youth.
