Bette L. Smith
CHESTERTOWN — Bette Larrimore Smith of Chestertown died on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, at her home. She was 89.
Mrs. Smith was born on May 7, 1928, the daughter of the late William and Mary Plummer Larrimore. She was a lifetime resident of Kent and Queen Anne’s counties. She graduated from Church Hill High School in 1945 and attended Beacom College.
Her early employment was with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. During her husband’s tour of duty with the Air Force, she followed him throughout the country to various military assignments.
Upon returning home, after the Korean War, she and her husband lived in Church Hill. She was employed as the secretary to Dr. Harry C. Rhodes, who was superintendent of the Queen Anne’s County school system. Upon the birth of their first child, she devoted her time to raising her children.
She later returned to work in Chestertown with the David Haacke Accounting Firm and later with the Chestertown Bank of Maryland.
Bette dedicated her life to her family. Never was she happier than when she was with them. She was also an accomplished bridge player and enjoyed meeting with her friends at the bridge table.
Bette was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a longtime member of the altar guild. She was also a member of the Chester River Yacht & Countr y Club. She served for a number of years on the Kent Youth Advisory Board.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 66 years, Rogers Smith; a son, Mark Smith; a daughter, Lisa Falls (Bill); five grandchildren, Kristen Smith, Kelsey Smith, Kyle Lindstrom, Corey Lindstrom and Katie Falls; a great-grandchild, Kylie Purse; and a brother, William Larrimore Jr. (Betty).
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chestertown.
