Kent Island varsity cheer team wins regionals
STEVENSVILLE — Kent Island High’s varsity cheer team attended East Regionals this past Saturday, Nov. 3, at Harford Community College in Bel Air. They competed against the top 10 high school teams from the East including: Hereford, Eastern Tech, Harford Tech, Sparrows Point, Patterson Mill, North East, North Harford, Pikesville, Bohemia Manor and Rising Sun.
Kent Island scored above all of the teams with a total score of 121.75. Hereford High took a close second with a score of 121.5.
Kent Island outscored other teams in difficulty levels but lost some points in their execution scores with stunting. A stunt fall came with a deduction, but their difficulty scores in stunts, pyramids, baskets and tumbling was enough to secure a first place finish.
When head coach Meghan Arboleda was asked what separates Kent Island from other teams within the state, she said, “Definitely our tumbling and difficulty. Both of these things set us apart and we are known for it throughout the state.”
The state competition will be held next Saturday at Harford Community College at noon.
Coach Laura Schroyer said, “The teams that are on our radar going into states are: Damascus, Marriotts Ridge and Hereford. We need to hit a clean routine to ensure our fifth state title.”
Coach Meg Cayer added, “They need to keep practicing hard this week and focus on perfecting their routine so they can hit a solid performance at states.”
Kent Island has won the last four state titles and anticipates a week of hard practices to bring in their fifth state title.
